DISCOVER THE ART OF YAKISUGI
Collection: Yakisugi Cutting Boards
What Is Yakisugi?
Yakisugi (焼杉) is the Japanese art of charring wood with controlled flame. Practiced for hundreds of years, it was originally used to preserve cedar cladding in Japanese architecture. The char layer hardens the wood surface, repels moisture, and inhibits bacterial growth - without a single synthetic coating.
At ARTSN, we apply Yakisugi to teak cutting boards. The result is a board that looks and performs unlike anything else in a kitchen.
Charred Teak, Not Painted Black
Our boards aren't stained. They aren't coated. The colour comes from the char itself - applied by hand with an open flame, then brushed back to reveal the wood grain beneath. No two boards look exactly the same.
After charring, each board is finished with food-grade mineral oil and a hardwax blend (beeswax and carnauba wax). Completely food safe. No lacquer, no adhesive.
Built for the Kitchen. Built to Last.
Every board in the Yakisugi collection is cut from a single piece of teak - no laminated strips, no glue joins - with edge grain construction for durability and knife longevity, 2cm thick across the full range, and conditioned with ARTSN Board Butter for care.
The charred teak surface develops a natural patina with knife use - it gets better looking over time, not worse. These boards are designed to last decades.
