How We Create Shou Sugi Ban Cutting Boards at ARTSN.

Wood Selection

Not every piece of wood can become a Shou Sugi Ban board. We specifically select pieces with:

  • Appropriate grain structure
  • Proper moisture content for charring
  • Proper density to create optimal water-beading properties
  • Absence of defects that would affect durability

We embrace natural variations rather than seeking uniformity. A knot here, a grain swirl there - these become defining features once charred.

Crafting & Shaping

Before flame ever touches wood, hours of careful preparation take place:

  • Wood is rough-cut and allowed to acclimate to our workshop environment.
  • Using progressively finer grits, we sand each surface - not to achieve perfect smoothness, but to create the ideal canvas for charring.
  • Edge profiling comes next. We carefully round corners and edges.
  • Final dimensioning brings each board to exact specifications.

The Charring Process

Our artisans use specialized torches to char each surface. This requires:

  • Consistent heat application
  • Careful timing based on wood species
  • Attention to achieving even charring depth
  • Experience to recognize when optimal charring is achieved

Temperature, distance, duration - every variable is adjusted in real-time based on how each unique piece responds.

Brushing & Cleaning

After cooling, we use traditional brushes to remove loose char, revealing the pronounced grain beneath.

  • This is where each board's personality emerges
  • How deeply the grain has been accentuated
  • The unique texture that will camouflage future use
  • The individual character that makes this board yours

A final wash cleaning removes any remaining char dust.

Finishing

Over several days, we apply multiple coats of food-grade mineral oil and our hardwax blend. This process:

  • Enhances the natural water-beading properties
  • Deepens the visual richness of the pronounced grain
  • Protects while maintaining the tactile pleasure of real wood
  • Allows the imperfections to shine as features

Final buffing achieves the perfect finish - not glossy, not matte, but something in between that showcases each board's unique character while feeling wonderful under your hands.

  • Each board is individually crafted, not mass-produced

  • Natural variations make every piece unique

  • The process takes several days per board

  • It's an Investment in Artisanal Excellence
