Guarantee & returns details

  • Water beads off. The fire-sealed surface resists bacteria and doesn't stain.

  • One solid piece of hardwood. No glue, no joints, no laminate.

  • The char stays put. Sealed in, so it won't rub off in normal use; knife marks settle into the grain.

  • Food-safe finish. Sealed with our plant-based OilCure™.

  • Every board is one of a kind. Fire reveals the grain; no two are alike.

Product Description

“Black” in Japanese

A single piece of solid hardwood, hand-charred using Yakisugi - the centuries-old Japanese technique of preserving wood through fire.

The charring isn’t decorative. It hardens the surface, reveals the natural grain, and creates a deep carbon layer that helps repel water, resist bacteria, and minimise staining. Over time, KURO develops even more character through use.

At 45 x 30 x 2.5cm, KURO is our largest and heaviest board to date. Thick, weighty, and intentionally oversized, it’s designed for slow dinners, heavy prep, shared meals, and statement kitchens.

No unnecessary curves. No wasted space. Just a bold slab of blackened hardwood built to be used daily, and left on display.

The Proof

The Water Test

Same water. Same pour. Completely different result.

Regular Wood

Regular Wood

Absorbs. Stains. Warps.

Water penetrates the surface, carrying bacteria deep into the grain where cleaning can't reach.

ARTSN — Fire-Treated

ARTSN — Fire-Treated

Repels. Beads. Protects.

Water can't penetrate the charred carbon surface. It beads into perfect spheres and rolls away. No staining. No bacteria entry.

Our Story

Our limited collection of handcrafted, Japanese-inspired cutting boards have been created in partnership with skilled artisans—real people dedicated to crafting products that bring connection, functionality and beauty to your kitchen.

Shou Sugi Ban

Shou Sugi Ban, a traditional Japanese wood preservation technique, involves carefully charring the surface of wood to enhance its durability and beauty.

This age-old technique not only enhances the aesthetic appeal but also ensures that our cutting boards are exceptionally durable, hygienic, and ideal for the demands of modern kitchens.

Sustainable

Our process begins with responsibly sourced timber and reclaimed logs, carefully cut into smaller blocks. Through expert craftsmanship, these blocks are transformed into beautiful boards, each piece telling the story of sustainability and an artisans craft.

By far the best chopping boards I've used

These boards were super appealing to me as I wanted wooden boards that didn't retain moisture - I live in a humid location. Water does just roll off of these and after about two months of use, they still look great! I was also attracted the quality, craftsmanship and aesthetic so bought the duo and went back for the third largest one because I was so happy with them. If they did one with an etched in steak juice border, I'd buy that too. Overall, the best boards I've ever used and worth the investment - no nasty micro-plastics.

    Love my cutting board!

I have purchased a couple of different sizes of the Artsn chopping boards and love them. Easy to clean and look fabulous against my Japanese handles knives. . This larger board now rounds out all of the sizes that I use. The wait for the next batch was worth it No micro plastics to worry about. Highly recommend.
